Innova: Rethinking Heat Pumps for Future-Proof, Multifamily projects
For our latest SVL Coffee Break, we welcomed Jeff Ishankis, President of Sales for Innova USA, to discuss how Innova is rethinking heat pump technology for multifamily, hospitality, student housing, senior living, and other residential applications. Jeff shared how Innova’s decentralized HVAC solutions can help project teams reduce installation and operating costs while improving comfort, indoor air quality, and architectural flexibility.
A Different Approach to Multifamily HVAC
A major theme of the Coffee Break was simplifying HVAC design. Innova’s all-in-one heat pump solutions combine heating and cooling within individual spaces without requiring traditional outdoor condensing units or refrigerant line sets running throughout a building. Select configurations can also incorporate energy recovery ventilation and bathroom or kitchen exhaust.
This decentralized approach can be particularly valuable when compared with systems such as VRF. Instead of one system potentially affecting multiple apartments, Innova allows individual units to operate independently. Jeff explained that while equipment pricing may be comparable in some applications, installation cost is where significant project savings can emerge.
Innova offers several configurations, including vertical stack, ceiling-suspended, ceiling-ducted, wall-mounted, floor-mounted, and NexTech units, giving engineers flexibility to select a solution based on loads, available space, ductwork requirements, and architectural goals.
Inverter Technology for Comfort and Efficiency
Another important advantage is inverter-driven compressor technology. Rather than operating at either 100% on or 100% off, Innova units can ramp compressor capacity up or down based on the actual heating or cooling demand of the space.
For example, if a room only requires a portion of the unit’s available capacity, the compressor can reduce its output accordingly. This helps minimize unnecessary energy consumption while providing more consistent temperature control.
Controls also play an important role in maintaining that performance. Innova offers native controls and has worked with Verdant on thermostat integration designed to maintain the benefits of inverter operation. Third-party thermostat integration is also possible, although Jeff emphasized the importance of properly matching thermostat capabilities with the equipment.
Quiet Operation Meets Architectural Flexibility
For multifamily and hotel applications, HVAC performance isn’t the only consideration—sound and aesthetics matter too.
Jeff highlighted Innova’s quiet operation, with certain units operating at approximately 27 dBA. The units also feature a slim, contemporary appearance designed to integrate more naturally into guestrooms and living spaces.
The presentation showcased projects where designers incorporated louvers into window systems, façades, cabinetry, soffits, and architectural elements. These installation options can help minimize the visual impact of HVAC equipment while giving architects more freedom in building design.
The flexibility extends to renovations as well. Innova’s NexTech, for example, is designed as a next-generation PTAC solution that can fit a standard 42-by-16-inch PTAC opening, offering a potential upgrade path for existing multifamily and hospitality properties.
Designed for a Range of Applications
During the Q&A, Jeff noted that Innova equipment is being applied across multifamily buildings, student housing, senior living facilities, hotels, condominiums, affordable housing, and other residential projects.
For colder climates, another important discussion centered on low-ambient heating. Jeff shared that the equipment has been tested down to -10°F, with electric heat options available depending on the unit. For applications requiring additional supplemental heat, controls can also be configured to enable solutions such as baseboard heat.
