Take the Next Step in Pump Efficiency: Reduce Energy Use & Improve System Performance with Wilo
For our latest SVL Coffee Break, we welcomed Justin Hovinen, National Sales Manager with Wilo USA, to explore how advanced pump technology, electronically commutated (EC) motors and intelligent controls are transforming commercial HVAC system efficiency.
As SVL introduces Wilo’s commercial pump portfolio to Minnesota, North Dakota and Western Wisconsin, this session highlighted opportunities for mechanical engineers, contractors and building owners to reduce energy consumption, improve system performance and lower total cost of ownership.
Advancing Commercial Pump Technology
With nearly 150 years of history, Wilo has helped shape modern pumping technology, from early circulators to today’s high-efficiency smart pumps.
Wilo’s commercial portfolio includes wet rotor circulators, inline pumps, end suction pumps, split case pumps, pressure booster systems and prefabricated mechanical packages.
With North American manufacturing operations in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Wilo offers domestic manufacturing capabilities, customizable solutions and streamlined project support.
Why EC Motor Technology Matters
One of the webinar’s biggest discussions centered on electronically commutated motor technology.
Traditional induction motors experience energy losses through motor slip, heat generation and reduced efficiency at partial loads.
Wilo’s EC motors use permanent magnet technology to eliminate motor slip and maintain higher efficiency across varying operating conditions.
During the presentation, Wilo compared motor efficiencies of approximately 92% for EC technology versus 83% for a conventional induction motor and variable frequency drive at full speed.
At reduced speeds, the efficiency advantage becomes even more significant.
For commercial HVAC applications, this can translate into lower electricity consumption, quieter operation, smaller equipment footprints and reduced operating costs.
Smarter Controls Deliver Greater Energy Savings
Motor efficiency is only part of the equation.
Wilo’s intelligent pumps incorporate advanced control strategies that adjust performance to match actual building demand.
Available operating modes include constant flow, constant differential pressure, variable differential pressure and automatic adaptive control.
Rather than operating continuously at maximum capacity, intelligent pumps can reduce speed and pressure as system demand decreases.
Integrated sensors monitor operating conditions, while BACnet, Modbus and other connectivity options support building automation integration.
These capabilities help optimize hydronic systems without sacrificing required flow or system performance.
Lowering Total Cost of Ownership
The webinar highlighted how high-efficiency pumps can deliver financial benefits beyond reduced electricity consumption.
Wilo shared a University of Michigan application demonstrating how integrated EC motor technology reduced installation complexity and operating expenses.
In that example, the ECM installation cost approximately $1,300 less than a conventional pump and VFD arrangement.
Wilo also presented substantial long-term energy savings compared with traditional constant-speed pumping.
Actual savings depend on operating hours, system design, control strategies and local utility rates.
Simplifying Installation, Commissioning & Maintenance
Wilo’s smart pumps also incorporate features designed to simplify ongoing operation.
Through the Wilo Assistant app, technicians can connect to compatible pumps, review operating data, adjust settings and generate commissioning reports.
Built-in diagnostics, flow monitoring and protective controls provide additional visibility into system performance.
For building operators, these capabilities can help streamline troubleshooting, reduce maintenance demands and support more reliable operation.
Engineered Pump Packages & Selection Tools
Beyond individual pumps, Wilo offers prefabricated booster systems, chiller pump skids and complete mechanical room packages.
These solutions can incorporate redundant pumps, controls, tanks and accessories into factory-assembled, tested systems.
Wilo’s online selection software further simplifies design by providing pump curves, technical documentation, efficiency comparisons and Revit files.
For engineers, these resources support accurate equipment selection and more efficient project coordination.
A Smarter Approach to Commercial HVAC Efficiency
Wilo demonstrates how intelligent pumping technology can improve overall HVAC system performance while supporting building energy-efficiency and decarbonization goals.
Whether designing a new hydronic system, upgrading existing equipment or evaluating packaged solutions, selecting the right pump and control strategy can make a measurable difference.
