Geo-PAK: Rethinking Geothermal for Urban Challenges
Urban construction presents a paradox for geothermal systems: while dense developments benefit most from high-efficiency heating and cooling, they often have the least room for traditional geothermal fields. That’s exactly the problem SVL’s President, Jim Lubratt, tackled in the latest Coffee Break Webinar, titled “Geo-PAK: Rethinking Geothermal for Urban Challenges.” Drawing on over 30 years of geothermal experience, Jim guided attendees through how Geo-PAK is transforming what’s achievable in space-constrained geothermal HVAC design.
From Football Fields to Tennis Courts
Traditional geothermal vertical bore fields require a lot of land—think football field scale—due to the 20- to 25-foot spacing between bores needed to avoid thermal saturation. But Geo-PAK geothermal technology reimagines this entirely. By controlling the BTUs in and out of the field with a smart balancing algorithm and adding a dry cooler or small backup boiler, Geo-PAK systems can shrink bore spacing to as little as 8 feet. This compresses the field footprint down by up to 89%, small enough to fit within a tennis court-sized geothermal array.
“We don’t need a football field anymore,” Jim remarked. “We can make this work in an urban lot, under a parking ramp, even under a driveway—I’ve got five vertical bores under mine!”
Thermal Battery vs. Flow Exchange
Geo-PAK’s efficiency is rooted in it being a true geothermal thermal battery. Unlike SCHLE systems, which rely on aquifer flow to carry away heat (and come with subsurface complexity and regulatory hurdles), vertical bore systems store heat in the earth and reuse it during heating or cooling seasons. This makes them predictable, resilient, and ideal for urban geothermal installations and long-term, low-maintenance HVAC design.
IRA Incentives Make It Even Smarter
Jim highlighted how the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) sweetens the deal for geothermal heating and cooling projects. With baseline credits up to 30%, and potential bonuses reaching 50%, Geo-PAK is not only efficient—it’s financially strategic. Domestic content requirements, prevailing wage rules, and energy community bonuses add layers of opportunity for sustainable mechanical systems in city environments.
Pairing Geo-PAK with Next-Gen Tech
To push the boundaries further, SVL has begun pairing Geo-PAK systems with CO₂-based heat pumps from Flow Environmental, a Minnesota-based manufacturer. CO₂ refrigerant offers high-lift capability, low global warming potential, and can deliver 180°F domestic hot water—all while reducing the geothermal bore field size by up to 50%.
This pairing creates an all-in-one chiller, boiler, energy recovery, and domestic hot water solution with unbeatable sustainability and performance in dense urban HVAC applications.
Flexibility and Reliability in One Package
Unlike aquifer-dependent systems, Geo-PAK with vertical geothermal bores has:
- No down well components or screens to foul
- No moving subsurface parts
- No reliance on unpredictable aquifer flow
- Long warranties and scalable geothermal configurations
From installation through to decades of operation, it’s as close to bulletproof HVAC design as the industry gets.
A Final Word: Education and Empowerment
Jim wrapped up the webinar with an invitation: SVL is happy to deliver this presentation in person or virtually to design engineers, owners, and contractors exploring space-efficient geothermal systems. Whether you’re working on new construction, a tight-space retrofit, or just considering your decarbonization strategy, the SVL team is ready to guide you into geothermal’s next frontier.
