Optimize Electrification with Nortek Air Solutions Packaged Refrigeration Systems
In a recent SVL Coffee Break Webinar, HVAC professionals had the opportunity to learn from Eric Norris, National Sales Manager for DX at Nortek Air Solutions. The session covered Nortek’s packaged DX systems, with particular attention to the V-Cube™ and V-Cube Slim™ product lines, as well as high-end custom packaged DX and Penthouse units.
Introduction to Nortek’s DX Equipment
Brent Danielson from SVL kicked off the session by introducing Eric Norris, who brings a wealth of knowledge to the HVAC industry. Eric has extensive experience in heat pumps, controls, heat recovery, and refrigeration systems. His background includes product development at other HVAC manufacturers, and he is currently focused on expanding the Nortek DX product line.
Nortek’s Manufacturing Expertise
Eric provided a brief overview of Nortek Air Solutions, which manufactures custom air handling units at three locations: Tualatin, OR, Okarche, OK, and Montreal, QC. The DX products are primarily built at their Aston plant, located just northeast of Montreal. Additionally, Nortek’s Oklahoma City plant produces coils for their equipment, further supporting the customization needs of various HVAC applications.
History of Nortek and Mammoth
The session covered a bit of history on Mammoth, one of Nortek’s key product lines. Originally founded as Brown Sheet Metal Company in 1935, Mammoth evolved into a leader in industrial furnaces and was acquired by Nortek in 1986. Alongside Mammoth, the Venmar Energy Pack product line was also highlighted, which offers a combination of energy recovery and ultra-line performance.
Spotlight on V Cube and V Cube Slim
The heart of the presentation focused on Nortek’s V Cube and V Cube Slim vertical self-contained units, both highly customizable and engineered for maximum efficiency in HVAC systems.
V Cube Slim:
- Compact, Pre-Engineered vertical unit.
- Available in capacities ranging from 15 to 80 tons and 5,000 to 24,000 CFM.
- Fits through a standard three-foot door and is designed for ease of installation in high-rise buildings.
- Available as water-cooled DX or chilled water cooling, with additional options for electric
heat and steam heating coils.
V Cube:
- Larger and more customizable, with capacities ranging from 9 to 140 tons and 4,000 to 40,000 CFM.
- Can be configured with plug fan or FANWALL TECHNOLOGY®, offering flexible coil selections
and water-side economizers. - Unlike the V Cube Slim, the V Cube breaks down into smaller modules but requires field
piping connections.
Energy Efficiency and Flexibility
Nortek’s focus on energy efficiency is evident in the V Cube product line. Both the V Cube and V Cube Slim offer options for variable speed compressors, digital scrolls, and BACnet protocols for controls. Eric highlighted how these units help meet the increasing demand for electrification in HVAC systems, particularly in areas where natural gas heat is being phased out in favor of water-source heat pumps.
Additionally, the modular design of these units makes them ideal for renovation projects in occupied buildings. Eric shared a case study where the V Cube Slim was installed over a weekend in a multi-story building, with minimal disruption to the occupants.
Customization and Applications
Eric emphasized Nortek’s ability to customize their units to meet the specific needs of clients, whether it’s adding corrosion-resistant materials, offering different gauge options for cabinets, or incorporating airside economizers. The flexibility of Nortek’s DX systems allows them to serve a wide range of industries, including schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities.
Final Thoughts
With the increasing shift towards geothermal and water-source heat pumps, Eric sees exciting opportunities for the V Cube and V Cube Slim in applications that require all-electric solutions.
Conclusion
The Nortek V Cube and V Cube Slim offer some of the most flexible and energy-efficient options available in the DX market today. Whether you’re designing a new system or upgrading an existing one, these units provide a compact footprint with robust customization options.
