Polarized Filtration Coffee Break with Dynamic Air Quality Solutions
What is Polarized Filtration and How Does it Compare to Traditional Air Cleaning Solutions?
We posed that question to Rich Gillick from Dynamic Air Quality Solutions at our recent Coffee Break. This webinar series features the brightest minds in HVAC sharing their insider knowledge about the best solutions on the market. Register now for our next coffee break to stay up to speed.
If you didn’t catch our chat with Dynamic AQS, here’s a little of what you missed:
The Benefits of Polarized Filtration
In a polarized filtration system, a charged metal screen induces an electrostatic charge to the dust particles and the filtration media they’re trying to pass through. This charge causes the particles to bind to all sides of the filtering strands, not just the side that faces upstream of the airflow, like traditional passive filtration.
Gillick showcased the Dynamic V8, their premier air filtering solution that uses polarized media to trap particles and VOCs. Because particles stick to all sides of the media, the V8 system can trap an enormous amount of dust before needing a filter change (Dynamic’s filters can hold eight to ten times the amount of dust as a MERV 13 passive filter of the same size.)
This static charge also results in the particles becoming attracted to one another. As these particles agglomerate into larger clumps, they’re even more easily removed by the filtration system.
How Does Polarized Filtration Reduce Costs?
The Dynamic V8 system saves energy because it offers a minimum MERV 13 rating at a lower static pressure drop than a passive filtration system of the same rating. And because its filters trap more dust, the maintenance cycles are comparatively long, and filter changes are fewer, resulting in further savings over the equipment’s lifecycle.
Gillick noted the Dynamic V8 system installation at ASHRAE Headquarters in Atlanta. It took seven and a half years before enough dust built up to a static pressure drop of .4” that necessitated a filter media change.
Better IAQ
Of course, the most important benefit of any filtration system is better indoor air quality. The V8 system can work in concert with any AHU, so it’s an excellent option for a retrofit. It executes not only the removal of particulates but TVOCs as well. It also filters out a higher percentage of particles on the first pass than a passive MERV 13 system, which is beneficial to combat the continued presence of COVID-19.
Its modular design means it can grow with your facility’s capacity, from 100 CFM to the most extensive applications. The V8 system also comes in duct-mounted formulations for retrofits tight on mechanical space. It achieves the MERV 13/14 with no power (ASHRAE 52.2) and MERV 15 equivalent with the power on (ASHRAE 52.2-NC).
