Rethink What’s Possible with Water-to-Water Heat Pump Solutions from Ecoforest
As commercial building owners and engineers continue pursuing electrification, decarbonization, and energy efficiency goals, water-to-water heat pump technology is becoming an increasingly attractive solution for sustainable HVAC system design. During a recent SVL Coffee Break webinar, Ecoforest showcased how advanced inverter-driven heat pumps, intelligent controls, and flexible source management are helping engineers rethink what’s possible with modern hydronic heating and cooling systems.
Hosted by SVL Sales Engineer Brent Danielson, the webinar featured Charlie Bushby, North America Sales Representative for Ecoforest. Charlie provided an in-depth look at Ecoforest’s innovative approach to commercial heat pump design and how their technology supports geothermal systems, hybrid source applications, domestic hot water production, and simultaneous heating and cooling.
Ecoforest: A Pioneer in Water-to-Water Heat Pump Innovation
Founded in Spain and still family-owned today, Ecoforest has been developing advanced heat pump technology for more than a decade. In partnership with the University of Vigo and Copeland, Ecoforest introduced the world’s first fully inverter-driven water-to-water heat pump in 2012. Since then, the company has continued expanding its product portfolio while maintaining a strong focus on software-driven innovation.
Unlike many traditional heat pump manufacturers, Ecoforest designs every system around inverter-driven compressors, electronic expansion valves, variable-speed pumps, and proprietary control software. This approach allows the heat pumps to adapt to changing building loads while maximizing system efficiency and reducing operating costs.
Why Inverter-Driven Heat Pumps Matter
One of the key webinar themes was the importance of inverter technology in commercial HVAC applications.
Traditional fixed-speed heat pumps cycle on and off repeatedly as building loads change. Ecoforest’s inverter-driven compressors continuously modulate capacity to match real-time demand, resulting in:
- Improved HVAC energy efficiency
- Reduced compressor wear and longer equipment life
- Lower operating costs
- Smaller ground loop requirements
- Reduced buffer tank sizing
- Improved geothermal system performance
- Better seasonal efficiency
By precisely matching building loads, Ecoforest heat pumps can operate more efficiently across a wider range of conditions while maintaining occupant comfort.
Flexible Source Management Beyond Geothermal
While geothermal heat pump systems remain a major focus for building electrification projects, Ecoforest emphasized that successful water-to-water heat pump applications are not limited to ground loops.
Their proprietary E-Source technology allows systems to intelligently manage multiple energy sources, including:
- Geothermal ground loops
- Open-loop water systems
- Dry coolers
- Solar thermal systems
- Waste heat recovery
- Thermal energy storage systems
- District energy networks
The system automatically selects the most efficient energy source available at any given time, helping maximize performance while minimizing energy consumption. This flexibility allows engineers to design hybrid HVAC systems tailored to each project’s unique requirements.
Simultaneous Heating and Cooling Capabilities
Another standout feature discussed during the webinar was Ecoforest’s ability to provide simultaneous heating and cooling.
Using a single refrigerant circuit, Ecoforest heat pumps can transfer energy between cooling and heating loads within a building. For example, heat removed from cooling zones can be redirected to provide domestic hot water, space heating, or pool heating.
This capability creates opportunities for:
- Hotels
- Multifamily housing
- Universities
- Healthcare facilities
- Recreation centers
- Commercial office buildings
By recovering and reusing thermal energy rather than rejecting it, building owners can significantly improve overall system efficiency and reduce energy costs.
Intelligent Controls Simplify Complex HVAC Systems
A major differentiator for Ecoforest is its software platform.
Rather than controlling only the heat pump itself, Ecoforest systems can manage pumps, valves, domestic hot water production, heating distribution circuits, cooling circuits, and source selection through a unified control strategy.
For every project, Ecoforest develops customized system schematics that clearly identify equipment layouts, control points, and operating sequences. This project-specific engineering support helps simplify installation, commissioning, and long-term operation.
In addition, remote monitoring capabilities allow technicians and facility operators to access system performance data, adjust settings, and troubleshoot equipment without being physically present on-site.
The Future of Commercial Heat Pump Systems
One of the clearest takeaways from the webinar was that modern heat pump technology is evolving beyond simple heating and cooling equipment.
Through advanced controls, inverter-driven operation, geothermal integration, and hybrid energy source management, Ecoforest is helping commercial HVAC professionals unlock new possibilities for decarbonization and energy efficiency.
As more building owners seek sustainable HVAC solutions that support electrification goals while controlling operating costs, water-to-water heat pumps will continue to play a critical role in the future of commercial building design.
